Pet Love + Adorable Photo + Facebook = New Pet Cat
What do you get when you combine the love of pets, a great photo, and the power of social media? A new pet and 2 happy kids.
When Boston area dad, Dan Urbano told his kids that they could get a new pet cat if they got 1,000 likes on Facebook, he never thought that they would be able to pull it off. Boy, was he wrong.
Remi (7) Evelyn (1) took their Dad up on the challenge. With some help from mom and a whiteboard, the ambitious kids were able to post a picture on Facebook (above) and reach an astounding 107,000+ shares, 126,000 shares, and over 11,000 comments.
A man of his word, Dan Urbano accepted defeat (see his reaction here) and rewarded the kids with a new cat from a nearby cat shelter. Remi and Evelyn named the cat Hairietta L. Pawturr (the “L” stands for likes).
How Do We Translate This To Leveraging Content?
All of us our envious of the exposure attained by a couple kids right? We’re supposed to be marketers and most of us probably don’t get half that amount of exposure! So how were these kids able to make it look easy?
While you can use the “they-used-cats” excuse if you want, the simple fact of the matter is that most marketers focus on themselves without giving the visitor incentive to act. While the kids were acting for themselves, they combined hyper targeted outreach (friends) with incentivizing the outcome (bet). Once people “liked” the photo, they had a vested interest in seeing the outcome.
Give your visitors a reason to want to act with the content you give them, don’t just shove something in front of them and expect them to perform miracles for you.
